Invader’s success: behavioural and reproductive plasticity of interacting exotic dung beetles

چکیده

Abstract Dung beetles have been introduced to non-native sites perform dung removal function in cattle pastures. Despite some species becoming invasive, their behavioural and reproductive strategies remain be elucidated detail. Here we evaluated the shift behaviour reproduction of two beetles, Euoniticellus intermedius Digitonthophagus gazella , when they interact with same or other out native range. Under natural conditions, E. brood masses were lighter traps (i.e., field enclosures) more total masses. In laboratory, D. induced faster colonization by conspecifics. The presence conspecifics heterospecifics reduced success revealing intense competition for dung. offspring, females emerged larger differential maternal investment triggered competitors. conclusion, plasticity are fundamental become successful invaders.

Dung Beetles and Microbial Decomposition of Dung

Dung beetles belong to the superfamily Scarabaeoidea, and are mostly within the subfamilies of Scarabaeinae and Aphodiinae. They are given their name because they feed partially or exclusively on feces. Each species of dung beetles can be classified as one of several types: rollers, tunnelers and dwellers. Rollers roll the dung into round balls, which are then used for brooding chambers or as a...

Removal rates of native and exotic dung by dung beetles (Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) in a fragmented tropical rain forest.

Many studies have evaluated the effect of forest fragmentation on dung beetle assemblage structure. However, few have analyzed how forest fragmentation affects the processes carried out by these insects in tropical forests where their food sources consist mainly of dung produced by native herbivore mammals. With the conversion of forests to pastures, cattle dung has become an exotic alternative...

The success of animal invaders.

Z ebra mussel, kudzu, fire ant, gypsy moth, common carp— whether you are a farmer, outdoors enthusiast, cottage owner, or ecologist, you have undoubtedly witnessed the spread and adverse impacts of invasive species. As long as humans have migrated, we have carried species from their homeland to provide some familiar comforts of home in new lands. This trend was exemplified by the acclimatizatio...

Large-scale spatial ecology of dung beetles

Recent modelling work shows that the composition of local communities can be influenced by the configuration of the surrounding landscape, but many of these models assume that all community members display the same type of extinction-colonization dynamics. I use Aphodius dung beetles to test the hypothesis that interspecific differences in habitat selection and dispersal capacity may translate ...

Innate olfactory preferences in dung beetles.

The effects of insect larval diet on adult olfactory responses to host-plant or food volatiles are still debated. The induction of adult host preferences has been studied in insects with diverse ecologies, including parasitoids, flower-visitors and phytophagous species. We investigated this question for the first time in a coprophagous insect species. Larvae of the French scarab dung beetle Agr...
